Davao City, Philippines -- A major milestone for residents of Island Garden City of Samal was marked today as Davao Light and Power Company formally assumed control of the distribution assets of Northern Davao Electric Cooperative (NORDECO).
The transition was carried out following the enforcement of a Writ of Possession issued by the Regional Trial Court Branch 4 Panabo City, authorizing Davao Light to take over NORDECO’s distribution system and related facilities. Local officials, including city leaders and representatives from the power utility, witnessed the implementation.
Governor Edwin Jubahib emphasized that the development was the result of collective efforts among government officials and the community, underscoring that the primary goal is improved service, lower electricity rates, and a more stable power supply for Davao del Norte.
Under Republic Act No. 12144, Davao Light has been granted authority, including the exercise of eminent domain, to operate as the sole electricity provider in areas previously covered by NORDECO’s franchise.
The company also assured consumers of round-the-clock emergency response services, with billing under Davao Light expected to begin within a month. Local officials expressed optimism that the power transition will attract more investors, with several resort operators signaling possible rate reductions once the new provider is fully in place.
