Metro Davao Development Authority Bill Nears Enactment, Says Sen. Bong Go
Davao City, Philippines – Senator Christopher "Bong" Go expressed optimism that the Metropolitan Davao Development Authority (MDDA) Act will soon be signed into law, potentially transforming the landscape of development and governance in the Davao Region.
Speaking during an ambush interview after monitoring the operations of the Malasakit Center and overseeing the turnover of financial assistance at the Southern Philippines Medical Center (SPMC) on Saturday, March 19, Go reiterated his commitment to supporting integrated and strategic development in Southern Mindanao.
“I filed Senate Bill 2157. Ito pong Metro Davao Development Authority, suportado po ito ng mga kasamahan ko sa Senado. Ipinasa namin at inaasahan po namin na dumating na po ito sa mesa ng Pangulo and hopefully sana po kung maihabol sa March 21,” Go said.
The Senate approved the measure on January 17, 2022. Senator Go, who authored and co-sponsored the bill, shared that the MDDA proposal has gained strong support and is now expected to be signed by President Rodrigo Duterte in the coming days.
“Meron pong ceremonial signing ang Pangulo sa MalacaΓ±ang… maisali na rin po ito at finally magkakaroon na po tayo ng sarili nating MDDA,” Go added.
The MDDA is envisioned as a coordinating body that will unify the local government units (LGUs) of Davao City and its neighboring municipalities and cities under a shared vision of development. It is modeled after the MMDA, but designed to address the unique characteristics and needs of Region XI.
“Lumalaki na po ang businesses dito at lumalawak na po ang ating rehiyon. Isa po tayo, Region 11, sa booming regions so talagang dapat may maayos na koordinasyon through the creation of the MDDA,” he pointed out.
Go emphasized the importance of effective collaboration between LGUs in ensuring faster and more efficient public service delivery.
“Mas maayos na koordinasyon between mga members po nito kasi napakalaki po ng rehiyon natin. Even Davao City, isa po ito sa pinakamalaking siyudad sa buong Pilipinas,” he noted.
Once enacted, the MDDA is expected to lead efforts in urban planning, transportation, disaster response, and public infrastructure coordination across the metropolitan Davao area. The initiative is seen as a critical step in strengthening economic resilience, regional governance, and investment readiness in the south.
With Metro Davao’s growing population, expanding economy, and increasing strategic significance, the establishment of the MDDA could mark the beginning of a more coordinated, inclusive, and forward-looking approach to regional development.
